This study examines the implementation of problem-based learning principles within the German for Specific Purposes textbook Menschen im Beruf – Medizin B2/C1, designed for professional medical contexts. Employing a quantitative content analysis across all units, the research evaluates the material against established criteria of problem-oriented instruction.
The findings indicate that the textbook demonstrates a strong problem-based orientation, particularly through productive, communicative, and context-bound tasks. However, the analysis also reveals potential for enhancement, specifically regarding learner collaboration, the inclusion of authentic problem-solving phases, and a more balanced distribution of tasks across language skills. Ultimately, this study offers a methodological framework for comparative international research. In an era of increasing mobility among healthcare professionals, the standardization and evaluation of problem-based learning materials remain essential for facilitating successful professional integration.
